NOWRA EAST PS – ANZAC Day

Every year we have special days.

Special days help us remember things.

Christmas helps us remember the birth of Jesus Christ which is important for Christians.

Easter helps us to remember that Jesus died on the Cross but came back to save us.

But these days, most children remember Easter for getting Easter eggs.

We celebrate Australia Day which is our national birthday.

It is the day the first fleet arrived in Australia in 1788.

There are other days that help us remember things but a very special day is ANZAC Day.

April 25th, is the day the legend of Anzac was born on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915.

It is a very special day because it helps us remember all those Australian soldiers who died in wars all over the world.

Many of those soldiers were only teenagers when they were killed.

Many were sons or brothers or fathers.

They died fighting in a war for what they thought was right.

We stop to remember them and to pay them our respects.

Today Australian soldiers are fighting a war in Afghanistan and some have been killed.

They were very brave and it wouldn’t be fair to forget what they did.

But Anzac Day is not a day for remembering war.

It is a day to remind us that we should work hard to avoid going to war.

But it is also a day to remember that our young men and women were brave enough to face death so that others could be free.

We celebrate their bravery and sacrifice.

The least we can do is not to forget what they did for us.

So when you see the old men marching with their medals, they are doing it to remind us of the mates they lost.

They want us to join with them in remembering those young men and women, who were their friends when they were young and who never came back.

Who never again saw their mothers and fathers, or brother and sisters ever again.

That is why we have Anzac Day and I hope you never forget.

So please find out more about it and help cherish the memories of those that died for us every Anzac Day.
